It is important to me that I provide my students with choices in their learning. In asking my students what their interests are and what they are excited to learn I am able to create a deeper engagement with my class. By giving my students choice they are also able to discover the best ways they can present their understanding while giving them value and pride in their work. It is my responsibility as their teacher to provide all of the necessary and essential tools they need to guide them on the path to understanding.
Some students may require frequent breaks in order to recollect their thoughts and emotions, for this reason I have created a Reset Corner. In the Reset Corner students will be able to use tools to gather, calm, and reset themselves so that they can be ready to learn again. I have found that a Reset Corner has been very helpful with students who are having big feelings. In addition, I will also provide brain breaks and movement moments where we can rest our minds and activate our other muscles in order to come back to learning with enthusiasm!
In my fifth grade class your child will experience a circle time each morning to build community and give space to our differences. This circle time gives students the opportunity to be brave in sharing their stories and ideas while other have the opportunity to listen. Some students may feel more comfortable writing their thoughts which is why my students will each have their own journal. There will be time each day for students to reflect in their journals so they can safely express their big feelings and ideas. Through many activities we will discover each one of our backgrounds and traditions and share them with our class to build a strong community. I believe in celebrating our individuality and this is where each child will have the space to do that.
Our influences have the greatest effects on us. From parenting, media, friendships, and all the way down to the spaces we surround ourselves with. We bring these influences with us everywhere we go continuing this cycle of impact, and even your children bring them into this very classroom each day. Your child is unique and special in their own way which is why it is important to embody each individual while we build this classroom community.
